perhaps the yamaha solution to your conceptual problem :
see the track as a pipe-line
into the pipe-line you record a phrase USxxx
if you copy the track you copy the phrase USxxx
if you want to edit this phrase USxxx without changing the other tracks
containing this phrase USxxx you have to copy this phrase USxxx, put this
copy USxxy into your new track and then edit your new phrase USxxy.
