This has all been discussed before, but as it's probably the most common
problem people have with the RM1X, it bears repeating.
To use the RM1X effectively, you really need to understand the whole
naming convention/heirarchy. In the rm1x you have Styles (the 60 preset
styles and 50 user ones) that are each made of 16 Sections (which can be up
to 256 bars long). Each section is in turn made of 16 Tracks. Now the
confusing part: A track is not necessarily a collection of midi notes and
cc messages. Instead it's a 'space' where Information about what voice to
use, what PHRASE to play, and what midi effects to use. A PHRASE is the
basic unit of midi data on the RM1X. If you go to the main screen for the
Style you are working on (the screen with the Style's name on it) and press
the Pattern Mode key one more time, you'll be in what's called the pattern
patch screen. Here you can see the 16 Tracks, and what Phrases are filled
in their slots (if any). Change Sections, and you'll see the Phrases that
fill the Tracks that make up that New section. Now, when you use the Copy
Section job, The RM1X merely duplicates the Phrase patching information of
the Section that is being copied into the New section. For example: If your
section A has Phrase US001 on track 1 and Phrase US002 on track 2, and you
copy Section A to section F, Section F will ALSO have Phrase US001 on track
1 and Phrase US002 on track 2. If you make a change to any of the PHRASES
(which you do when you record on a track) Section A will have the same
changes, as it's made up of the exact same Phrases. What you need to do
then, If you want to copy a section and have it have identical, but
seperate (new numbers) Phrases, is to copy each phrase to a new phrase, and
then put the new phrases in the correct tracks. In our example, you could
copy phrase US001 to phrase US011 and Phrase US002 to Phrase US012 and then
put Phrase US011 In Track one of Section F and put Phrase US012 in Track
Two of Section F. You'd then have to sections that sounded the same, but
were made up of different phrases. This is kind of a pain in the ass,
though, so it's nice that there is an easier way. Use the "Split" function
and to split off a full length section (4 bars, for example) to the new
Section. If, in our example, Section A is 8 bars long, and has Phrases on
10 different tracks, and you wanted to make an editable duplicate of it on
section F, just switch to section A, use the Split button, Set the start
measure to 001, the end measure to 008, and the split to Section to F.
Press "Do" et voila! a new section, Identical, but Different. Seperate but
Equal ;)
It seems kind of wierd when you first are checking it out, but once you
learn it you realize that there are a lot of neat things you can do using
the patch screen and with the basic unit of data being the phrase.
I hope this all was intellegible and uh keep having fun with your RM1X (I
know I'm having tons of fun with mine)
