Kieran,

The AWE64 should work fine.  It's a widely supported MIDI interface.

The rule of thumb with ins and outs is:  OUT goes to IN, and IN goes to OUT.
This makes sense as the signal coming OUT of the computer should go  IN to the
Rm1x, and vice-versa.

Version 7 of Cakewalk is perhaps the most buggy of all it's incarnations.  I
would advise you to scare up a copy of 6, which is waaay more stable, or jump
straight to version 9, which is the best release yet.
