That's related to a problem that I've been contemplating on the transport
redesign. Since there's a desire to have harmonic instruments in the
sampler... we come up with sort of a clash with the way Hydrogen has
organized instruments. We end up with two sorts:
* Drum-like instruments. These are just plain triggered.
The note # is used by H2 to route the trigger to the
right instrument. Typically, an entire drum kit will
be bound to a MIDI channel.
* Harmonic instruments. This needs all data routed to it,
regardless of note # (because it processes the note #).
Typically, a single instrument is bound to a MIDI
channel.
On traditional synthesizers, the entire drum kit is treated like a single,
multi-sampled instrument. However, I'm not sure that's how Hydrogen
should approach it. But, if we also want expose Hydrogen as a plugin...
we could be forced into this sort of concept.
Any thoughts on how to approach these, conceptually?
* When you create a drum kit -- should they be sort
of segregated into a special group?
* Would you want to require separate MIDI channels
for drum kits vs. harmonic instruments?
* How do you see these things being specified?
* Do we have users spec. the MIDI note #'s?
* Would you want to allow multiple drum kits?
* How does this interface transfer to a plugin-type
interface?
For some of these, the answers may be obvious -- but I think it's worth
talking about.
Peace,
Gabriel
