meanwhile I have my Ubuntu Jaunty running and as an intermediate result I
can report, the slightly changed command

  scons prefix=/usr
  scons install DESTDIR=./test

did not result in a double compile. I also like to notice, Jaunty
provides scons 1.2.0, while Fedora 10 has scons 1.0.0 on board. May be
this plays a role, but I will continue testing.

An other issue came out on Jaunty. Hydrogens scons setup does not check
for libflac++ in the beginning (but does for other libraries; may be this
can be improved?). So compiling the application stoped somewhere in the
middle complaining about a missing FLAC++/all.h (or similar). I installed
the missing libflac++-dev package and as soon I ran again

  scons prefix=/usr

the compile started from the very beginning again. "make" would have
continued where it stopped in this case.
