Two-dimensionsal triggering (where n=1 is the velocity, n=2 is the
position of the hit) is called "Positional Sensing" and is a feature of
most advanced drum brains that are on the market today (there's also
some kind of convention about how express it via MIDI CC commands). So
yes, it would make some sense to use information to create a different
kind of sound in hydrogen. If this has to be a second dimension of
samples stands to discussion. The second dimension could also be
simulated by manipulating the ADSR envelope and maybe some EQing to get
a brighter tone in the vicinity of the rim. I would think that it is
harder to achieve good results for the second method, but i guess that
not a lot of people are interested in recording n*m samples (n velocity
steps, m position steps). The other downside of multi-dimensional
layering is the amount of memory which is necessary to store the
samples. Drumkits with multiple, one-dimensional layers can be up to
some gigabytes already. You would need disk streaming for samples (like
linux sampler has, and as long requested by some hydrogen users) to cope
with such large libraries, since most people which speak about these
things on our forums are not using machines with 12GB memory, but small
and often older laptops with 1-4gb. Of course there are no limits to
one's imagination for the use of other dimensions... There has been
also requests for the possibility to script the layer selection.

Best regards,
Sebastian
