Three intrepid birders faced snow, ice and windy conditions to do a
Big Day today in Des Moines and Lee counties. We started in
Burlington and worked our way to Keokuk.
The most interesting bird today was an American pipit seen near the
Mississippi River in Keokuk. This appears to be a record late bird.
There is only one other Iowa record for American pipit in January,
that being on January 1, 1999.
Other birds of interest included:
Mute swan (1)
Trumpeter swan (1 untagged bird)
Northern pintail (2)
Long-tailed duck (2)
American white pelican (15)
Peregrine falcon (1)
Lapland longspurs (50-60)
4 species of icterids, including Red-winged blackbird, Rusty
blackbird, Common grackle and Brown-headed cowbird
Eurasian tree sparrow (lots)
John Rutenbeck, Burlington
Chuck Fuller, Burlington
Jim Fuller, Iowa City
