In conjunction with a class for beginning birders, the Iowa City Bird Club held a field trip to Cone Marsh in Louisa County today. Highlights were 2 Horned Grebes in breeding plumage in the NE corner, 300 Greater White-fronted Geese and 1 Snow Goose in the NW corner, 14 duck species, at least 8 Sandhill Cranes, and Rusty Blackbirds.
In the field on the east side of Atwood Avenue, just north of G28, were an American Golden-Plover, several American Pipits, and a distant flock of longspurs. Single Eurasian Collared-Doves were seen along Hwy. 6 one mile SE of Iowa City, and along X14 at the south edge of Lone Tree.
