Ed, I've been curious about this topic for a while, and have not seen a reasonable answer to it yet:
If TSO is "a dead horse", as you say, then what is the currently available replacement for TSO (i.e., normal, everyday developer access and usage) supposed to be? Has IBM ever told anyone their intentions on this subject? Or is it like the theater-owner's line from "Shakespeare In Love": "Is a mystery"?
