I have contributed to both CBT and Open Source. In my experience, using
CVS is a whole lot easier -- especially when trying to get updates into
code originated by someone else. CVS and the SourceForge model facilitates
contribution from many and quick updates. It would be "difficult" in the
sense that many of us would have to learn something new and it would take
time and effort to build the infrastucture. I think that was the poster's
original point, that there are "better" ways to do things but inertia may
block adoption.

What "existing mechanisms" are you referring to?

I don't understand the "cross-platform" argument. There is nothing about
distributing code in this way that is dependent on the target platform.

I'm intrigued by the ideas expressed in the original post and also some of
the responses. I'm a gray haired MVS sysprog and for the last 5 years I've
also been doing Java/Web integration with the mainframe. I've found many
excellent tools and technologies (Eclipse, CVS, Unit testing frameworks,
etc) that could be useful in the MVS world. The adapatation to MVS has
been slow. An interesting perception that these are "PC" tools. Several
responses in this thread mentioned that the "PC world" can't run or isn't
an audience for the contents of the CBT tape. I don't understand that
comment, as the CBT tape is already publicly available on the web.
