You may want to take a look at IBM's SIZE390 IBM offers a "sizing service" called SIZE390. SIZE390 takes your current hardware/software/utilization and returns an estimate for an IBM hardware/software equivalent.
Earlier this year my shop investigated migration scenarios for our production Oracle 9i from our current SUN/UNIX 2-box cluster to our z800 0B1, @115MIPS w/8g (yeah, it's a baby but it rocks with its load). Oracle would run on an IFL under Linux. Even with a dedicated IFL, IBM's SIZE390 returned very ugly results. IBM said we needed ***900 MIPS!*** to handle the SUN load! IBM recommended a z990 and said the z800 would not do the trick. Needless to say, IBM's an$wer went over real well with our mgt... DOA. We are now exploring running Oracle under Linux on clustered AMD64 boxes. No real results as yet. Hope your news is better.
