John I only noticed the third time of looking. z/CS is short for z/OS Communications Server which has an SNA side - VTAM - and an IP side, the successor to TCP/IP for MVS.
The TN3270 server function - now a separate address space - has adopted VTAM's Unformatted System Services in order to allow a prettier and more flexible means of soliciting the application with which a session will be set up concatenated to the TN3270 TCP connection. Because they have cut loose with an enhancement not also adopted by VTAM, the "ownership" of the USS function is cast somewhat into doubt. Apart from the misuse angle causing confusion when the initials USS are seen, there is a possibility for ambiguity when the topic under discussion is the z/OS Communications Server TELNET servers. > ... TCPIP is a UNIX based application. Not really. UNIX System Services has got involved with the Communications Server (CS) IP component over the years and, I expect, will into the future. However, it started before UNIX System Services and its predecessors appeared - or perhaps about the same time but was completely independent. Consequently, I expect you could run CS IP and have nothing to do with anything touched by UNIX System Services. Can anybody still reading verify this? I'll go look. But, to me, UNIX is not TCPIP or VTAM, but I can see some possibility of confusion since TCPIP is a UNIX based application.
