Officially, IBM did *not* choose "USS" for "UNIX System Services". You are
invited to enter "USS" in the "Search text" box in the "z/OS UNIX" bookshelf on
the following page:

http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/z/os/zos/bkserv/zshelves10.html

Yes "USS" does create some hits mainly in reference to the "Health
Checker" "names" but nowhere do you find - how it hurts my fingers to type
it! - "UNIX System Services" (USS). In other words the developers who
caused the characters "USS" to appear in the manuals were not paying
attention.

Now, if you do the same in the case of the "Communications Server"
bookshelf, you will be inundated with hits - and not just because there are
more manuals, look further.

A key "hit" is at the beginning of Chapter 12, "Establishing and controlling
SNA
sessions" in the SNA Network Implementation Guide, the second sentence:

<quote>

To tailor sessions, VTAM uses the unformatted system service (USS),
interpret, logon mode, and Class of Service tables."

</quote>

Curiously the final "s" is missing here but you will find it used in other
instances
such as at the beginning of the section "Defining operator messages and
commands":

<quote>

You can modify certain messages and operator commands. These commands
and messages are defined in unformatted system services (USS) tables and
are called USS messages and USS commands.

</quote>

I have the advantage of having seen John Eells response where he makes this
all quite clear from the standpoint of an IBM developer.

And still being enhanced, see the current thread "USSTAB".
