My first encounter was with Mike Guzik at ADR, who wrote the
sort program for the 709x and Stretch machines. He migrated to
applications programming after a nasty accident; he was a truck
driver, and had his arm pinned and injured by a bouncing tire
that came off another truck.
On a more common note, I know several programmers who started
out as operators; but one of them went bad - he became an IBM
manager, complete with three piece, pin-striped suit and watch
fob <g>
But on my first job the lead operator had ample skills to do
programming, but refused to do so - with overtime he was making
too much money and couldn't afford the cut in pay.
