Those are just the maximum number of cylinders available per volume with different levels of microcode. Volumes containing *any* number of cylinders (up to the maximum) may be configured. And, the microcode that supported a maximum of only 32767 is totally obsolete by now. For these reasons and others, we consider the -27 and -54 designations to be misleading. We steer clear of them completely.

In the ESS 2105-800 ("shark"), it doesn't make sense to define volumes with the maximum number of cylinders because so much space would be wasted. We have standardized our shop on volumes with 61146 cylinders. That gives us four volumes per eight-pack and doesn't waste anything. Ours are configured for RAID-5 and 6+P+S. If we had another configuration, we would probably choose another value.
