Thanks

Most systems that are running on mainframes are not running on Linux. They are running z/OS, z/VM, z/VSE, z/TPF or there predecessors. Linux on IBM mainframe hardware is relatively new and still being developed.

What I believe most sites are doing are using Linux on the mainframe under z/VM to host many Linux images for Web servers, dns servers, virtual routers, etc. I remember that there is an ISP somewhere in Europe that replaced over 750 Sun SPARC servers with one 2-way z/800 for all of its server functions. I seem to remember that they upgraded to a 4-way and were up to about 1500 virtual Linux images.

There is a college in NY, Marist College, that runs a few hundred Linux images. All of the "servers" that the students use for the computer classes are actually virtual Linux images on the colleges mainframe.
