I am currently going to school as a Network Administrator. But they do
not teach mainframes but apart from me taking this course, I also take
the time on my own to read upon these "beasts"

I just like to know about these Mainframes. There very interesting to
learn.

I would say that most mainframes today are not running Linux. That the sites that are running Linux on their mainframes are not running the types of application you are talking about, yet.

Mostly Linux on the MF was so that you could migrate what was on 10, 20, 200 Intel boxes that were sitting there 90% idle and put on a single box and share CPU and Memeory resources.
