I think "agonizingly slow" would be a fair characterization.

It's been a long time since I had to do that, but what I discovered
is that if I temporarily turned off the SMF record types for 
catalog delete and catalog define, the repro mergecat ran a lot 
faster.  This was run during stand-alone systems time, and then a
catalog backup run when I finished each run so that I didn't care
about not having the delete/define SMF records.
