I can't tell you the number of time I have had "spirited conversations"
with ISV's concerning their "one-time upgrade fees". ISV's have been
allowed to get away with this legalized mugging for decades.

Let's say you purchase a home from a builder. He also offers you a contract
to provide maintenance on your home for a set fee each year. There's only 2
of you, so a small home suits your needs for the present. A few years down
the road, your family has increased in size, and now you need to increase
the size of your home. You invest YOUR money and add another bedroom. The
builder / maintenance provider of the home says the home is bigger and
better than the original so the maintenance will now cost more. You agree
because now there's more to possibly fix than on the smaller, original
house. But he also says the you owe him the difference of what you
originally paid for the house and it's value now -- AND -- for
that "upgrade fee", you don't get anything except the right to continue
living there.
