"long term commitment to a new job" !!! Don't make me
laugh. When was any employer willing to make a long
term commitment, and in return expect the same from you
?

Seriously, this question is "off limits" to employers,
there have been lawsuits over things similar, asked at
interviews. Remember years back when employers would
ask women their reproductive plans?

The employer has no right to know where you live, under
what circumstances, and for how long. Ask them how
long they plan to keep the office at its present
site..... I did once, at an interview with about 5 IT
and HR people, all of a sudden everyone was looking at
their shoes, coughing, waiting for someone else to
speak.

If you like the job, take it, get a temp place to live
closer by. All your plans are yours only, not subject
to their review. I presently have a "temp condo" for
this purpose, short commute. My "real house" is in a
smaller community, 150 miles away. This arrangement
came about after several layoffs, buyouts, outsources,
M&A situations, hence I will not subject the existence
of my "real house" to whim of my current employer.

For the record, I love my job, love my employer, and am
permanently committed to them, unless the company
across the street offers me $1.00 more.

I wish you well.

I believe employers see the unwillingness to move as a
lack of long term commitment to the new job.

My position is going away. It's not a question of if,
but when. I've had a couple of interviews this past
week. One place is about 3.5 hours away and the other
is 2.5 hours away. Both places wanted to know my plans
for relocating. Both times I said I wanted to keep my
house and rent an apartment close to the place of work.
I definitely got the impression thay was not the
correct answer! Is that such a bad thing, considering
my house is paid for, my wife has a very good job, and
we're both OK with being away from each other during
the week????
