I know of at least two shops around my neck of the woods with 0 sysprogs left, running on nothing. They attempt to find contract sysprogs when they run into very serious difficulties but they don't always like the prices they are quoted so often just continue to run without for extended periods of time. One of those shops had 1 sysprog until recently - he got burned out from the (a) long commute from his home and (b) long, long hours without backup. (I don't recall if he had remote access from his home or not, but at some point that's a more of a curse than a help.) zSeries with z/OS can be so stable it literally runs itself, apparently.
