I agree. I was trying to think of what kind of a channel connected box would be required to be able to create a "KVM" (Keyboard Video Mouse) type environment for z/Linux running under z/VM or in an LPAR. After all, the zSeries hardware has PCI slots. Why not a PCI graphics card? <grin>. Oh, and it needs to use the newest, undocumented "SIGA" architecture and not the standard SSCH with CCWs. If "SIGA" is documented somewhere, somebody please give me a pointer. Oh, other than "use the source, Luke!" to see how it is used in the QETH driver on Linux. Actually, part of the problem in the original is very similar to one that we experience here every day. The "old style" UNIX sysadmins don't really want to bother learning how to do Linux system administration without their usual toolset, which include "full screen" utilities such as the vi editor. They cannot/refuse to work in a "dumb terminal" environment. Imagine trying to do modern z/OS sysprogging (or anything else) if all you had were 2471 line-mode terminals or an RJE card reader/punch with a line printer. That's what is driving the "need" for a "smart serial terminal" that can be used with the z/Linux system's IP stack "dies" for some reason (like somebody messed up the routes or did an "ifdown" by accident). -- John McKown Senior Systems Programmer HealthMarkets Keeping the Promise of Affordable Coverage Administrative Services Group Information Technology This message (including any attachments) contains confidential information intended for a specific individual and purpose, and its content is protected by law.
