You are not doing an apples-to-apples comparison. I will grant that the actual "drive" platters et al. may be the same. But your USB drive is likely slower (5400 or 7200 RPM vs. 15,000 RPM). Your interface is much slower (USB vs. Ficon). Your USB drive is a single point of failure, unless you are putting it in a software RAID array of some sort. Your USB drive may or may not have "tagged queuing" to minimize seeks. Of course, the mainframe DASD box has gigabytes of RAM cache to speed it up and help mask latencies. It also likely has "intelligent" pre-staging of data from disk to cache. However, I will agree that Enterprise zSeries DASD is still more expensive that the corresponding Enterprise "Open" Systems (Windows and UNIX) DASD. Does anybody know about iSeries DASD prices? Just curious. -- John McKown Senior Systems Programmer HealthMarkets Keeping the Promise of Affordable Coverage Administrative Services Group Information Technology The information contained in this e-mail message may be privileged and/or confidential.
