I don't remember the entomology. IBM-Main was started in 1986 as charter  
members of BITNET although it was a rollover from ARPAnet and some other  
networking endeavors. I attended SHARE regularly thru early 90's and don't 
think  the 
IBM=Main thing came up 'til a few years ago. I know at the request of the  
'board' the sign was removed as too big and bulky and blocking the view? Anyway
