Well, mostly so that they can threaten to hold your feet to the fire. Once any judge notices the lopsided contract's terms (e.g., there's not much in it for you except the job on a day-to-day basis) there really isn't much of a contract left. But this whole discussion centers on a job posting from an apparently inexperienced headhunter who didn't understand that the original job post was (an experienced guess here:) really looking for a specific individual or perhaps a specific class of individuals. The job was limited term at a govt/military facility... I would suggest that they are looking (only) for a long-term veteran who is, in turn, looking to extend his pension money while he/she is able to put in a few more years in non-military govt. service. (We called them 'double-dippers' in pre-PC times.) So we can kick the position around on ibm-main - until Darren calls it a halt - but this particular job doesn't look (to me) like it was ever intended for general consumption.
