2. RAID took care of the rest.
3. Talk about cache.

Allocate with whatever units you wish.
Performance issues regarding cylinder, block, track allocation are long gone.

Allocation units are still important to some application programmers from a space-management point of view.

We all know that we have tools and mechanisms to deal with many of the issues involved, but we still have to work with a few people who haven't come forward from the Dark Ages of Storage Management just yet, and might never do so. I haven't fully embraced Modern Storage Management myself, in all honesty; I'm a bit more concerned with some other aspects of our computing world. I use SMS, but HSM is still a closed book for me; (Slammed closed, burned and buried, especially after working with the Innovation tools!)
