Actually, it's simpler than that.
IBM used to promise it would not cost more for the same functionality in each 
subsequent release.
Mind you, if you exploit new technology all bets are off.

(0.95)**N becomes infeasible after awhile, since this tends towards zero.

(Also, I cannot find it on the website[s], but I remember the promise from many 
presentations in the 1990's)
