If the tape had an error it should have been (automatically) placed in read only status and the data migrated to another tape then ejected. If the error was something like 'unavailable' (e.g. tape stuck or dropped) putting it in the recovery slot should clear it. If there is any question about the tapes usability you should eject it and force the data migration. The data that is/could be on the tape is probably worth more that the cost of the tape itself.

If there has been some kind of back-end hardware problem, I think it should have called home. If you look on the display panel for the robot it may show the error. If you can't determine anything else, I think you might want your CE to check it out.
