And with the toleration PTF, that's all you get - toleration. The new
FIXCAT holddata, which will be included in HOLDDATA shipped after Sept
26, is not received, just skipped over without the 30K+ warning messages
and RC8 from receive. You have to migrate to SMP/E 3.5 (and use the
UPGRADE command to enable FIXCAT processing) in order to actually store
any of the new FIXCAT data into your Global zones.
This looks like a very useful feature - possibly even a good reason to
separately upgrade SMP/E if not planning to install z/OS 1.10. It in
effect eliminates the need to manually download PSP buckets and manually
attempt to reconcile what PTFs you may be missing from the PSP before
installing new hardware, migrating to new z/OS releases, etc.

I heard about this change several times during the week in San Jose. I'm
pretty sure that the message was that RECEIVE will *not fail* absent the
toleration PTF. You will get 30K+ messages complaining about unrecognized
data in the input stream and a return code 8 to make you pay attention. All
recognized data--that is, everything you currently process
successfully--will be properly digested and absorbed, as all properly
absorbed nutrients are, into vital motors for the sustenance of the total
organism. The undigested intake is deposited elsewhere.
In other words, without the toleration PTF, you will have to deal with a
rather foul mess, but there will be no harm.
