Around 15 years ago I was involved in disaster-recoveryfrom the
operating system side - the MVS days. I remember that, at that time, I
used to map the installation device addresses to the device addresses at
the DR site. This meant that we could use our own device addresses and
our own esoteric names without change. This was a normal part of MVS IO
gen, etc. and did not require VM.
We are now involved in disaster-recovery at my present site. When I
describe this facility to the Z/OS operating system guy he gives me a
funny look. I scanned though some of the present manuals and do not see
any reference to this kind of facility. Was the ability to do this kind
of mapping lost somewhere along the way? I know that I did not dream it.

We used to do the same thing at Clearing, but finally decided the
headaches weren't worth the trouble. When IODF became current for us, we
opted to use the existing IODF in the DR provider's system. Since we
didn't use much in the way of esoteric names, it worked like a champ for
us and saved some time during recovery testing.
We would grab a list of vol-sers and device addresses when we arrived
and use my PDSUPDTE program to update the JCL streams we used for
restore and recovery. After that, it was just a matter of running the
streams. We did most of the restores using the FDRDRP program, which I
HIGHLY recommmend.
