Being aware doesn't always mean it won't work.   But IIRC for the z990/z890
z/OS needed the compatibility FMID - even if running under z/VM. But if you
had that you should have been fine for the z9 and probably z10 if you 
weren't using new features.  I know some of this is also in the archives.
I think someone said they even had 1.4 running on a z10 under z/VM 
(I know it won't IPL natively).
