There are many reasons.
I wrote an article about the reasons in November 2004 for IBM Systems Magazine
("Don't be Mislead by MIPS").
While it may seem dated, the reasons are still valid, and have been since 1981
(when I first got into the field), at least.
The latest 'technology dividend' cr*p has just made a confusing issue more
confusing.
