They vary. A long (6, 8, 10, 12 inch) piece of bread like a large "hot dog" bun or short "french bread". Slit open lengthwise. Stuffed with all sorts of different meats, cheeses, spices, condiments (mustards, mayonaises, various "salad dressings", olives), and who knows what else.
