My memory may be rusty on the details, but I recall:
McDonald's either sued or was preparing to sue Clan McDonald over the
use of the name "McDonald".
McDonald's prevailed in court over the use of "McCoffee" (IIRC) by a
firm or restaurant. The decision, as reported in the media, forbade
present or future use of Mc.....
At one time, a group of investors in Anchorage, Alaska, requested a
McDonald's franchise. Anchorage at that time had no major fast food
franchises. Their request was denied. The group then built their own
restaurant called "Grizzly Burger". It did quite well until McDonald's
came in across the street and started a price war. Grizzly Burger had
a marquee, so the group put up a sign saying "Even Ronald eats at the
Griz.". McDonald's won huge damages against them and they went out of
business.
IBM was set to bring out a release of OS/2 branded "Eagle", but
changed plans when confronted by someone ? who was using the tradename
"Eagle".
I'm somewhat surprised that Apple hasn't sued over product names
beginning with "I" or that Nazisoft hasn't sued over names beginning
with "My".
It seems justice depends on what judge you get.
FWIW, both Don Knuth and Max Lucado have published a book called "3:16"
