You might also see if .ods spreadsheets would be acceptable. A quick qoogle search turns up lots of information about creating them. Here is one: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/web/library/wa-odf/ .ods is the native spreadsheet format for OpenOffice, Libre Office and others.
