*Size* (disk space) might be a constraint so compression is good.

That seems to be an exercise in seeing how many needless utilities you can
exploit.  Just transfer the pax archive.

And the OP says bandwidth is not a constraint; no need to compress.
Even so, pax has a "-z" option.
