hi,

Long time ago I learned: If you remove one parameter, you divide the possibilities of errors by at least 3.

apply this to the number of "similar" protocols.

We need the unified standard to get rid of n file transfer protocols, ok, now
you have n+1

Pigeons can easily carry some gigabytes. you may need some redundancy in the
presence of hunters.

At least one standard has carefully avoided to specify how data objects are to be transferred, iso 20022 (aka 2O o 22, with o=+ ==> 42)

cheers to ftp, 50 years old. why do we have smtp, http?

More secure? back to line 1

come from cheers: The suggestion was whether IBM should systematically? made available  all ftp(s) repositories also though http(s), wasn't it?

remarks about how little effort is required to ... isn't very helpful.

30 ago a paranoiac secu admin only allow a customer to do outgoing ports 80 and 443. I don' remember whether we put an ftp or telnet server on our end to allow the customer to administer their machine :-)

best
