Working for an Aerospace company on the East Coast we had titles in the systems programmers groups and pay grades within these groups/titles until you became a Manager did that change. also there were those Engineering guys :) the "Fellows" that were in another category in more ways than one, I recall one time in a meeting with these guys trying to solve an issue with an aircraft and they needed as much computing power we had available, it was quite interesting the solutions they came up with. However, many companies also confer a 'corporate' title as well. For example, it was common at one point for aerospace companies in Southern California to designate everyone an 'MTS', or Member of Technical Staff. This was regardless of specialty or platform. I worked for a bank that made everyone look like a bank officer. I was hired in as Information Officer, rising over the years to the exalted level of Vice President. This was all based on salary level, although I was told the titles(s) conferred on me the authority to sign documents on behalf of the bank. Practically, I once had to convince someone who called me for technical assistance that despite being a titular VP, I actually did know something about JES2. I'm intrigued by the multiplicity of functional titles, but I'm at a loss as to how to compare them with each other.
