When I was hired long time ago it began with an interview with my future
boss (a former DBA), later I met two of my future collegues in a sort of
interview situation (we had lunch etc). One was an IMS Sysprog, the other
was a DBA.

That was a very good way to evaluate a possible candidate in  my opinion.
