As for time tested, isn't half a century long enough?

There are always risks unless this code is bulletproof and never has anyone 
else making changes that doesn't understand the nuances. Never assume someone 
will look at this through your eyes. The art of commenting code is dying. Most 
non-HLASM code comments summarize intent instead of the idea. I'm sure Binyamin 
could successfully convey that information but why not use a time-tested 
implementation that is known to work. One small mistake and others may struggle 
to understand the full design.
