This is a subject that was discussed here several times. As we (must) prepare to discontinue our current mainframe (IBM stop licensing zPDT) and be able to port to a different mainframe, we developed a program to retrieve dataset allocation information and create the jcl to recreate it.
The trick is to run ftp on the local host and using CD and DIR commands. The output is written to dataset allocated to OUTPUT dd. If you like, I can post the code.
