When I started in systems programming in 1978, most of the IBM manuals were
free. I remember talking to our account SE at the time, and he said that
most of them were free if you ordered a reasonable quantity. I think the
extra priced products you had to pay for the manuals back then, but most MVS
manuals such as the JCL guide were free. We had a room back then with
shelves on both sides that had literally hundreds of manuals.

Let's also remember that in the "good old days" you paid for every manual,
so there's no comparison to the ability to access hundreds of manuals and
have them available for free. This doesn't even count all the SHARE
presentations and numerous other sources of information.
