Okay to throw in my $0.02 worth since "IT" (Security & Integrity PTFs) has been
mentioned, in my previous job, I had expanded a couple of REXX programs that
processed a SMP/e LIST to compare it against a list of Security & Integrity
PTFs. This JOB to verify if a S/I PTF was installed, was run each WEEK against
50+ LPARs, each LPAR had its own SMP/e environment, and reported back to the
team that was tasked to make sure that any S/I PTFs were installed. At the
time the JAVA was NOT being installed via SMP/e and when the JAVA PTF's started
making their appearances in the list of S/I PTF's, well it started to cause
some additional consternation to determine if the appropriate JAVA code was
installed. As I understand it, since leaving that job, they have converted the
JAVA to an SMP/e install.

By the way, I do not think "java -version" will display if it is the 32-bit or
64-bit version of JAVA.

Security/Integrity PTF's are flagged by FMID. If that is not known, it is hard
to get/install the SEC/INT maintenance.
The amount of "additional work" (just receive, apply, accept(opt) an additional
few PTFs) to support JAVA via SMP/E is minimal and should take no more "space"
that non-smp methods.
For that reason I have chosen to install/maintain JAVA via SMP/E.

I agree (in general) that SMP/E is overkill since the packaging method for JAVA
maintenance is full replacement of the HFS/ZFS file.

Just my $0.02 USD worth...

The command:
<java_home>/bin/java -version

will tell you what version and maintenance level. IMO, it is not very useful
to install Java on z/OS via SMP/E because of the way that it is
maintained. The downside is the extra space required for SMP/E. Does
anyone see a benefit?
