It depends what you mean by "supported". Many things are "supported" but 
have been supplanted by newer things. I believe/suspect that this is true 
of the linkage editor. I believe that you are expected to use the binder. 
z/OS will continue to support (i.e., accommodate) modules produced by the 
the linkage editor.

This is certainly true for the assembler. You are expected to use HLASM. 
Would things work if you used ASMH (or G or F)? In some cases, yes.
z/OS will continue to support object produced by ASMH.

And for new function (as REFRPROT) we may choose not to accommodate things 
that do not reflect what you'd get if you did it "today". I'll grant that 
we probably didn't even think about this situation.
