I believe there is no simple yes/no answer to this question;
it could depend a lot if there are PL/1 modules built of several
components calling each other statically or dynamically, which are
changed separately.

If you expect that you are able to call a PL/1 module compiled by
a recent Enterprise compiler from an "old" unchanged PL/1 module,
compiled by the unsupported PL/1 for MVS compiler, you may get
into serious trouble.

On the other hand, if all programs are monilithic modules or main programs,
that don't call each other, such a step-by-step migration approach may work.

Other questions could be: what interfaces do exist to other products, such
as DB2, CICS, IMS, 3rd party? What changes need to be made to the
sources to keep those interfaces working?

HTH, kind regards

Bernd

Sorry to return to this again, but our customer has asked for some
clarification, especially now that z/OS 2.1 has now been out for some time.
I've been asked to check the following...

- Is anybody successfully running PL/1 for MVS 1.1.1 on z/OS 2.1?
- They are under the impression that migrating to Enterprise PL/1 needs a
mass recompile, but my understanding is that it can be a gradual process,
whereby if a program needs changing it can be recompiled using the new
compiler. It would be nice if I could go back and convince them that is correct.

They seem to accept that conversion to Enterprise PL/1 is inevitable, but want
to be clear how big a task it would be for them and what the implications are
of not doing it. I know what I would do but it's not my dog ... (well it is,
at the end of the day...)

Thanks for any advice

Regards and thanks
Paul

Subject: PL/1 and z/OS 2.1

Hi

I am aware that PL/1 for MVS 1.1.1 is unsupported (and probably has been for
some time) but is anybody using it on z/OS 2.1, or CICS 5.1 for that matter?
We have a customer who is reluctant to upgrade to Enterprise PL/1 or whatever
the most recent flavour is called.

Regards and thanks
Paul
