Thanks, Neil, for the detailed explanation - as well as the clarification about
CDS-based versus active-based displays. My thinking had been that possibly the
CDS display might display the defined-but-not-found volumes and the active
display only the 'found' volumes, but you clarified that for me as well.

Caveat: <insert daily digest delay here>

In particular, column 22 Physical Status will have Convert, Initial or NonSMS
for actual volumes with, as Mike mentioned, dashes (empty) for the un-assigned
volumes. [3] Columns 25+ will show the SMS status (Quiesce, Enable, etc.)
assigned to the volume whether it exists or not. Thus, you could set your
initial SMS state in the CDS before it's created ie. Quiesce,New. However,
every time you activate a configuration, all your 'ACTIVE' states are lost and
changed to the CDS value. [1] In the table, DB2003 does not exist yet. (I
edited 1, 4, & 5 from the list.)

VOLUME PHYSICAL STORAGE MVS1
SERIAL STATUS GRP NAME SMS
-(2)-- --(22)-- --(23)-- --(39)-
DB2000 CONVERT DB2APPDV QUINEW
DB2002 CONVERT DB2APPDV ENABLE
DB2003 ------- DB2APPDV ENABLE
DB2006 CONVERT DB2APPDV ENABLE

[1] the idea is to reduce the number of activations thus all my volumes are
set as ENABLE. I have a separate (daily) job that examines each pool, Quiesces
the most empty volume in each pool & Enables any volume not in the top 5 for
free space. Thus, if a Quiesced volume gets used, [2] the next candidate steps
in to fill the role.
[2] I used to religiously attempt to empty my Quiesced volumes when they were
static. Now, I don't stress about it.
[3] to remove the non-existent volumes from LISTVOL, I use the following
Filter value: Physical Status . . . . . . EQ CONVERT NONSMS INITIAL.
ISMF remembers it from one session to the next. Simply re-issue the FILTER
command once in DGTLGP33 VOLUME LIST.

ps. there is no difference between 'ACTIVE' & CDS-name display layout/results.

Volumes named but not created appear on the list but all values are blank.
