In the context of the RECEIVE command, SYSOUT(*) means the terminal, and has nothing to do with MSGCLASS.
See this page of the TSO/E Command Reference: http://publibz.boulder.ibm.com/cgi-bin/bookmgr_OS390/BOOKS/IKJ4C5C0/1.38.5 "If * is specified, these messages are directed to the terminal." When I specify a sysout class, instead of "*", the IEBCOPY messages don't appear on the terminal, and if the sysout is held I can view and/or save the messages from SDSF.
