The z/OS 1.8 DFSMdss Storage Admin Guide has 1984 as its earliest copyright date. During the 2007 ibm-main discussion of the dss undocumented reset of "changed bit" on volume restore, potential data loss issues therefrom, and eventual problem circumvention, IBM's resistance to correcting the problem was based on the bug having been introduced into the code in 1979; so the product must have been around in some form as early as 1979. Any one else know of earlier existence? As far as I'm aware ADSM product (which backed up non-mainframe files to mainframe tape) mentioned in Wheeler post is a totally unrelated to DSS product (which manipulates mainframe DASD and data sets). -- Joel C.
