That sounds a lot like DFDS, not DFDSS, though the document that Joel cites,
which can be found at
http://bitsavers.trailing-edge.com/pdf/ibm/serviceForConsultants/Service_For_Consultants_198312_Complete/03_Product_Summary_Software.pdf
does indeed refer to 5740-AM6 as DF/DSS, and 5740-UT3 as DFDS:

<quote>
DATA FACILITY DATA SET SERVICES (DFDS)
RELEASE 2 (5740-UT3)
Data Facility Data Set Services assists OS/VS users with protection and
recovery
of information on direct access storage devices, including the new 3380 and
3375
and 3850 Mass Storage System (MSS) virtual volumes and 3880 mdl 13, by
roviding full volume, partial volume and data set dump and restore facilities
on a
system basis and full and partial volume restore on a stand-alone basis.
</quote>

Also listed in the same document is DFEF Release 1 (5740-XYQ), which provided
support for ICF catalogs.

A later announcement, dated January, 1984, lists 5740-AM6 as DFDS and 5740-UT3
as DFDSS, correcting the error in the earlier document.
http://bitsavers.trailing-edge.com/pdf/ibm/serviceForConsultants/Service_For_Consultants_198401/198401_02_Product_Summary_Software.pdf

So it seems that release 2 of DFDSS was announced in 1983. I found this when
searching for 5740-UT3:
http://www.lookupmainframesoftware.com/soft_detail/dispsoft/1517
"Originally released as DFDSS (Data Facility Data Set Services) in 1980."
I don't know if this is a dependable source, but 1980 seems reasonable for the
first release if the second was in 1983.

I hadn't noticed this area of bitsavers before. Thanks for the hint, Joel.
