First we draw up a table on a spreadsheet listing the ports/location on both ends and the cable number. Then we (for existing cables) dive under the floor, get the cables out and lay them on the floor. For new cables we unroll then and inspect them for defects. We label them at both ends and write that down on a paper as well on a laptop. ONE CABLE at a time! We then pick them up one by one and move them a meter or two and work on the next cable and so on. All this to prevent any mislabelling. Then we lay them down and plug them. One cable at a time. Tedious, but error-free when done properly. All went jolly-jolly-jolly until a brainless operator pushed his trolley full of 3480 cartridges over some ESCON optic cables. It was while we were installing ESCON and getting those copper wires out. Some of these cables were 'live' and others were waiting to be connected. Luckily only those cables waiting to be connected, were damaged, while the 'live' ones were very dangerously lied nearby!!!!!! We had to fly in new cables from the little country south of Canada while the op was 'enjoying' the 'Red Carpet' before the top brass... Ouch!
